Professor Dermot Murphy presented “Financing dies in darkness? The impact of newspaper closures on public finance'”, at the 2018 Municipal Finance Conference. The paper is available here, and a video of his presentation is available here.  A key finding of the study is that “local government borrowing costs significantly increased for counties that have experienced a newspaper closure.
