Download iCal FileAs discussed at the UIC Urban Forum on September 13, cities and other local governments across the U.S. face a range of fiscal challenges, including revenue streams that remain below pre-Great Recession levels, the cost of legacy liabilities, and the budgetary implications of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
The Government Finance Research Center’s 2018 panel series features short presentations on the white papers written as the foundation of discussion at the Urban Forum. The panel series will allow attendees to engage in discussion with the authors and expand on ideas presented into living, breathing next steps for our fiscal challenges with a hint to what the fiscal future may hold.
Each panel will feature two Urban Forum white papers with a moderated discussion about how the ideas and direction presented in the papers relate to contemporary issues facing U.S. cities. It is not necessary to have attended this year’s Urban Forum to benefit from these discussions.
This event’s white papers are:
- “Long-term liabilities: Pensions, OPEBs and infrastructure” presented by Martin Luby, Assistant Professor of Public Affairs (University of Texas at Austin); and
- "When Needed Public Pension Reforms Fail or Appear to Be Legally Impossible, What Then? Are Unbalanced Budgets, Deficits and Government Collapse the Only Answer?” presented by James Spiotto, Managing Director (Chapman Strategic Advisors, LLC).
The event will be moderated by The Daily Line reporter AD Quig, who covers City Hall and Cook County Board. Prior to joining The Daily Line, she was a reporter/producer for several radio for WSBT in her home town of South Bend, Indiana; NPR's daily call-in current events show, Talk of the Nation; the national politics podcast Ken Rudin's Political Junkie; and at the Chicago radio startup, Rivet.
Refreshments will be provided. Door open at 4:30PM; program begins at 4:45PM; networking from 6-6:30PM.
